Nevada’s Budget Tightrope: Navigating the 2025 Legislative Session

As Nevada's 83rd Legislative Session progresses, lawmakers face a challenging fiscal landscape. With over $900 million in new spending requests on the table and a projected $191 million decrease in state revenues, many proposed initiatives are at risk.

The Fiscal Reality

The state's updated revenue projections have prompted legislative leaders to prioritize maintaining existing programs over introducing new expenditures. Assemblywoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno (D-North Las Vegas), chair of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, emphasized that this session is not conducive to additional appropriations.

Despite the tight budget, some bills with financial implications have advanced, including:

  • SB104: Funding for the creation and maintenance of school gardens.

  • SB228: Establishing a pediatric stem cell and bone marrow transplant program.

However, the majority of new spending proposals, such as universal free school meals and eviction diversion programs, face significant hurdles due to the constrained fiscal environment.
